What it detects
Breakaway Gap fires when a stock gaps open above its entire 20-day trading range and holds the gap into the close. Overnight repricing of that magnitude is almost always institutional (earnings, news, a re-rating), and the hold requirement confirms the move was bought rather than sold.
How Signal52 computes it
Three conditions: today’s open above the highest high of the prior 20 sessions, the opening gap at least the minimum gap percentage, and the close at or above the open. A gap that fades below its open the same day does not qualify.
How to read it
Breakaway gaps out of consolidation start moves. The risk is confusing them with exhaustion gaps late in a run, so check how extended the chart already is (an active Extension flag is a warning) and whether the gap emerges from a base. The day-after edge on gaps is typically negative because they often digest before continuing. This signal marks the event, not necessarily the ideal entry tick.
